A few of my favorite things about Vancouver BC

In honor of the Travel Bloggers Exchange (TBEX) being held in Vancouver BC in mid-June, here are a few of my favorite things about Vancouver:

Stanley Park:  one of the great urban parks anywhere, in my opinion.  I try to walk around the 10 kilometer (6 mile) seawall around the park every time I’m in the city.  It’s a magnificent way to take in the amazing water and mountain views Vancouver is blessed with.  I like to start on the Coal Harbour side (near the Westin Bayshore) and work my way around to English Bay, ending up with takeout fish & chips from Raincity Grill (see below) if it’s nice out.

The cute little ferries to Granville Island:  Granville Island has a great food market and lots of cool galleries and shops, but my favorite part of a visit here is taking the little foot passenger only ferries that buzz back and forth across False Creek.  You can use the ferries to do a nice long walking tour, starting in Yaletown, take a ferry over to Granville, then take the ferry on to the foot of Hornby (or vice versa).

Skytrain to Commercial Drive aka “The Drive”:  Vancouver’s Skytrain light rail system makes it easy to come out to this residential area that’s been compared to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury.  It’s the traditionally Italian neighborhood of the city, so there are still a few Italian bakeries around for sweet treats.  I like stopping into Havana for Cuban food.

Some of my favorite Vancouver eats:

Lamb popsicles at Vij’s (South Granville)—well, anything at Vij’s really but the lamb popsicles are really fantastic

Halibut & chips from the takeout window at Raincity Grill (English Bay)

Mussels & frites at Chambar (downtown)

Dim sum at Kirin (downtown and Richmond)

Lobster poutine and raw oysters at Coast (downtown)

A Japadog from the cart in front of the Sutton Place Hotel (downtown)

Short rib sandwich with sweet potato fries at Cactus Club (I usually go to the one on Burrard but there are various locations)
