On the Road: Seattle to Port Orford

On the Road: Seattle to Port Orford

I'm looking at the Pacific Ocean while having breakfast at WildSpring, a wonderful retreat in Port Orford on the southern Oregon Coast.

I left Seattle yesterday morning at 7 AM to beat the traffic and had smooth sailing down to Eugene Oregon, where I met a friend for lunch.  We went to the Koho Bistro, which is owned by a high school classmate of mine from Scituate Massachusetts (we ran into each other at a reunion last year and realized we were both living out in the Pacific NW).  Lunch was excellent but I was sorry to miss the owner as he was on vacation with his family.

After lunch, I crossed from I-5 to the coast on Rt. 38, a beautiful winding road along the Umpqua River.  The scenery, combined with plenty of passing lanes so it didn't get too frustrating being stuck behind a truck, made for a lovely drive.  It was topped off by the sight of a herd of elk at the elk sanctuary outside of Reedsport.

On the way down the coast to Port Orford, I stopped at Bandon Dunes, the famous golf resort.  There were plenty of golfers checking in so I was only able to see a couple of the rooms in the lodge (I've heard that the cottages are the nicest accommodations here).  It's a popular place--if you want to golf here, plan ahead, as tee times need to be reserved a year in advance or more during popular times, the concierge told me.

After a long eight hours of driving, I finally arrived at WildSpring and was happy to relax in my beautiful cabin, Raintree.  The five cabins all have similar layouts but the decor is different in each, with lovely artwork and furnishings.  After dinner, I sank into the slate spa at the edge of the property overlooking the ocean.  This is no mere hot tub--you can practically swim in it, it's so big, and the stonework is beautiful.  Watching the final rays of sunlight fade and the stars coming out while soaking was a fitting end to a long day.

Today I'm heading to Trinidad on the Northern California coast.  I'm planning to stop and do a hike or two in Redwood National Park--it's a beautiful day and I'm really looking forward to it.
