On the Road: Mendocino to Garberville

I'm sitting on the terrace of the venerable Benbow Inn and it's a gorgeous April evening.
The Inn sits on the banks of the Eel River, just off Rt. 101 (and while noise from the highway can be heard sitting out here on the terrace, it's a very lovely setting), in the heart of redwood country (Avenue of the Giants starts nearby). My room (a "Fireplace King") is absolutely huge, and has its own terrace to boot. I enjoyed a scone and a cup of tea earlier when I arrived (just before the end of afternoon tea) and the inn serves light hors d'oevres to guests as well before dinner. I didn't have far to travel today but I still managed to have a busy day. I started off with a walk out to the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse just north of Mendocino. The old lightkeeper's house has been refurbished and newly opened as a B&B--this would be a cool place to stay! Next up was a horseback ride on the beach just north of Fort Bragg with Ricochet Ranch. It was really beautiful and fun--we saw quite a few harbor seals hauled out on the rocks just off the beach we were riding on. I hadn't been on a horse in a while though so I'm definitely feeling it tonight! From there, I had a blast driving one of the twistier portions of Hwy 1 again, the stretch from Fort Bragg north to Leggett, where you rejoin Rt. 101. A short time later, I was here, just in time for tea. Tomorrow it's off to the Lost Coast and the Victorian town of Ferndale.
