San Juan Islands Trip--Friday Harbor

San Juan Islands Trip--Friday Harbor
Posted 03-06-2008 12:48 pm by Admin Admin

Several of the places I like to stay on San Juan Island have recently made additions or changes so I thought it was time for a trip up this way.

Of course, any reason to visit the San Juans is a good one!  I even enjoy the whole process of lining up for the ferry--of course, in the off-season getting to Anacortes an hour in advance is usually plenty of time (at least during the week), unlike the summer months when the waits are generally longer.  The wait and taking the ferry provides a great transition to slowing down to island time, I think.

My first night on the island was spent at Friday Harbor House right in the main town of Friday Harbor.  It's been a favorite for years, ever since it opened, and they recently added some new rooms so I wanted to visit and see the new rooms, plus it's been years since I've had the chance to stay here.  Friday Harbor House is still a great in-town oasis--the rooms are elegantly spare, almost Asian in feel, and most have a view of the harbor.  The new rooms are a bit larger, with a sitting area, and look out over the town towards the ferry terminal.  As always, I especially enjoyed taking a soak in the tub while gazing at the fireplace.  The restaurant wasn't open for dinner the night I was there (things are VERY quiet up here in the wintertime!) so I went over to The Place for dinner and enjoyed a  delicious petrale sole and a yummy warm chocolate cake with caramel sauce.

The next morning, I drove out to Lakedale Resort, one of Friday Harbor House's sister properties (both are managed by Columbia Hospitality).  It had been a while since I'd been here, and they've added a lodge and a rather interesting twist on camping called "glamping"--short for glamorous camping, if that's not too much of an oxymoron!  This summer, the resort will have about 12 canvas tents with wood floors and real beds (but no electricity or running water).  The tents weren't up yet since it's still winter but the sites overlooking the lake look very nice.

More later...
