What makes a foodie, a foodie?

I went to a wonderful event last night--it was a series of readings by local food writers called "Talking with Your Mouth Full" which was put together by Leite's Culinaria as a benefit for their scholarship program.
The readings were followed by a dinner at Tom Douglas's Palace Ballroom (here's a description of the event from his latest newsletter), which featured dishes mentioned in the readings. It was a whole lot of fun, and I was especially excited to get a chance to catch up with one of the writers who read from her work, Kathleen Flinn, an old friend who recently wrote a book about her experiences at the Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris called "The Sharper Your Knife, The Less You Cry". I bought a copy last night and had her sign it--I read a bit over lunch today and am really enjoying it so far. During the dinner, Tom spoke a couple times and said something in particular that really made me think. It was along the lines of "I hope you're all cooks..." I turned to my friend and said under my breath, well, not me...I just like to eat! It's not that I *can't* cook--I'm pretty good when I put my mind to it but I just don't really take the opportunity to do it much. Living alone, it seems like too much trouble much of the time. But I love good food and eating good food prepared well by someone else (usually in a restaurant) is definitely one of my greatest pleasures. I go out to eat often and I reminisce for months if not years about a great restaurant experience I've had. I love to read about food, including cookbooks--I just don't cook that often. So that leads me to my thought today (a la Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City)--can you be a foodie without really being a cook? I'd like to think so but Tom's comment definitely got me thinking. And who knows, maybe Kathleen's book will inspire me to try one or two of the recipes (although I can assure you I'm not going to be de-boning a turkey any time soon)!
