On the Road: Albion to Mendocino

I didn't have very far to go today--just up the road a few miles to Mendocino.
Today was a real "work" day (and I know you're all rolling your eyes out there!), in the sense that I had a list of about six different inns and B&Bs in and around Mendocino to visit. Mendocino has a lot of nice places, that's for sure! But that's part of what I do for my clients, is try to match them with the place that's right for them and not the place that's right for someone else. So looking at a bunch of places "head to head" if you will is very helpful. Of all the places I visited today, while I could have happily spent the night at any of them, the one that resonated with me the most was the Stanford Inn by the Sea, just south of town. It's a pastoral farm setting with gardens and animals (including llamas). The ocean views are distant rather than spectacular, but the place has a special ambience. The rooms are large and comfortably furnished, with lodge-y pine panelled walls, wood-burning fireplaces, feather beds, and balconies. So I decided to stay for the night and I was very glad I did--the feather bed was every bit as comfortable as it looked! Before checking in, I headed a few miles north of Mendocino to visit the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens--many of the rhodies are in bloom, and the path out to the headland was a nice walk on a beautiful day. I ate dinner at the MacCallum House in town, another inn that looked quite nice but is more formally decorated. Dinner was terrific--filet mignon from Marin County's Niman Ranch, and an "ice cream taco" with six small scoops of homemade ice cream in various flavors for dessert.
